Rationale
This Seminar is a collaboration between academic scholars and graduate students in the South-East Asian region and other developing countries,
where problems of international importance on public health, environmental and social issues are tackled.
Its aim is to strengthen the region's research capacity by providing a symposium where beginning graduate students present
their work to more experienced researchers and thus get the kind of feedback they need to undertake such practical research.
While such opportunities already exist through national and international academic conferences and workshops,
this Seminar is designed to provide, in addition, an affordable alternative for beginning students,
enabling them to freely attend a meeting where they present their work to experienced researchers who provide constructive critical appraisal.
The first Seminar in this series was held at KMIT University in April 2013 at Ladkrabang (Bangkok), and was largely attended by participants from Thailand. In June 2014 we moved the
venue to Phuket campus of Prince of Songkla University in Southern Thailand and expanded the participating institutions to include Bogor Agricultural University in West Java,
Indonesia. In February 2015 we moved our Seminar to the University of Malaya in Kuala Lumpur and then to Bogor Agricultural University in Indonesia in September 2015.
With the completion of the new ten-storey Pre-Clinical Science building in early 2016, we moved our annual Seminar in Research Methods and Practice to this building on Pattani Campus,
focusing on Data Science in 2017, Environmental and Social Science in 2018 and Climate Science and Financial Modeling in 2019.
This seminar was not held in 2020 due to the pandemic of COVID-19. In 2021 and 2022, seminars were held online, while in 2023 it was held both online and on-site.
