Rationale
This Seminar is a collaboration between academic scholars and graduate students in the South-East Asian region and other developing countries,
where problems of international importance are tackled on public health, environmental and social issues.
Its aim is to strengthen the region's research capacity by providing symposium where beginning graduate students present
their work to more experienced researchers and thus get the kind of feedback they need to undertake such practical research.
While such opportunities already exist through national and international academic conferences and workshops, this Seminar is designed to provide,
in addition, an affordable alternative for beginning students, enabling them to freely attend a meeting close to an international
airport served by budget airlines and held on a campus that provides low-cost food and accommodation, where they present their work to
experienced researchers who provide constructive critical appraisal.
The first Seminar in this series was held at KMIT University in April 2013 at Ladkrabang (Bangkok), and was largely attended by participants
from Thailand. In June 2014 we moved the venue to Phuket campus of Prince of Songkla University in Southern Thailand and expanded the
participating institutions to include Bogor Agricultural University in West Java, Indonesia. In February 2015 we moved our Seminar to the
University of Malaya in Kuala Lumpur and then to Bogor Agricultural University in Indonesia in September 2015.
With the the completion of the new ten-storey Pre-Clinical Science building in early 2016, we moved our annual Seminar in Research Methods and
Practice to this building on Pattani Campus, focusing on Data Science in 2017, Environmental and Social Sciece in 2018 and Climate Science and Financial Modeling in 2019.
This is the 8th ongoing seminar in 2021.
